Catherine Hettler - ARCH 1101 EXP1

Pre-Week 01
3 IMAGES + DESCRIPTIONS

a) Creative Piece - Hand Splint
I designed and produced the hand splint for a family friend with severe cerebral palsy as part of my Design and Technology HSC Major Work. His hand remains in a clenched position when under any stress or pressure making it difficult for him to point and use an iPad. The iPad is used for communicational purposes and is a great tool for his learning, making the splint a necessity for his growth.  The splint needed to be designed in a way that holds his hand in a pointed position while allowing him to use an iPad. This then helps build muscle memory so eventually he will no longer need the splint to aide him. The splint is currently in his possession and his family can see his improved ability to use an iPad efficiently and communicate his thoughts easier which was amazing to hear.
b) Piece of Architecture - building in Singapore woha
I took this photo from inside a taxi while driving through the city in Singapore earlier this year. I can no longer remember its location but I remember just being in awe of its design in taking on the literal meaning of an 'urban jungle'. I like how the bottom, an area seen directly by civilians walking or driving past, is designed to represent nature and a forrest like environment while the more urban 'typical' skyscraper sits above out of view. This creates a practicality to the design as they achieve the same effect of adding nature to our heavily industrialised cities, while still having the functional/ cost effective design of a skyscraper.
c) Something Beautiful - Hakuba Japan
I chose this image as I love the beauty of the unknown and I feel this image represents that perfectly.  From the image you can not see what lies beyond the edge, instead it captures people who are going and can see past it. The light on the mountains in the background makes what goes beyond the edge appear more desirable as the low lying clouds still cap part of the view. The textures within the image I also find beautiful along with the serenity it gives off from being at the top of a mountain.

THE STAIR CONCEPT MODEL SUBMISSION

The staircase design has been conceptualised through looking at the businesses of Mountain & Moon and Trent Jansen Studio, along with the illustration of the descriptive words of 'embedded' and 'floor' that consecutively correspond to the businesses designs. The translucent emerald glass  represents the jewels used in Mountain & Moon jewellery while the railing introduces the free form style of pieces from the Trent Jansen Studio as the staircase approaches the showroom.
